At Barra del Colorado Wildlife Refuge you could see mammals, reptiles and a great variety of fish, of which 343 species have been identified, including grouper and snook. In the area of marine species, 136 mollusks have been identified, among which the cambute and lobster stand out. Birds with striking colors can also be seen: rainbow-billed toucan or black warbler, green macaw (in danger of extinction), jacana, parrot, trogon or surucua, osprey, neotropical cormorant, blue heron, tricolor heron, white hawk, mountain hen, peacock and red-fronted parrot. The manatee (in danger of extinction), caimans, crocodiles, gaspar fish (recognized as a living fossil), tapir, jaguar, puma, congo and white-faced monkeys, caucel, manigordo and the three-toed sloth stand out. Red poison dart frogs (Dendrobates pumilio) can be found in the Cerro Tortuguero region.
